How do I apply for the Intern
Program?
The Department
of Human Resources (DHR) normally advertises for the Administrative Intern Program in late
winter. Subject to approval of
financing by the Board of Supervisors, DHR anticipates opening
another examination in the winter of 2010.
That class will likely begin in the late summer of 2010. Please visit us again in late winter 2010
to view the job announcement and download a County application. You can complete a job interest card at
our web page http://dhrdcap.co.la.ca.us/jic/interestcardform.cfm
to be notified when applications are being accepted for this and other
County positions.
What is the Administrative
Intern Program?
This Administrative Intern Program
is a successor to a former Administrative Trainee Program that began in
1933 and has a reputation of recruiting and training promising individuals
for administrative careers in public service. This unique program is a
two-year paid internship during which Interns, as
County employees, work in administrative assignments where they are
provided an overview of County government through practical job assignments
and participation in trainings.
Through their administrative
assignments, Interns are exposed to the responsibilities
of County departments that provide services in such critical areas as
public health, child welfare, social services, arts and cultural
activities, law enforcement, and community development.
As an Administrative Intern I
incumbents must successfully complete a 12-month probationary period and
all work assignments and training requirements during the two-year program.
During the course of the program, Interns are given periodic appraisals
assessing their performance in departmental assignments.
Interns are assigned to the Department of
Human Resources, the Chief Executive Office, or a line department where
they rotate through divisions performing analytical work and gaining
experience in such areas as recruitment and selection, organizational
development, asset management, classification, compensation, employee
relations, budget operations and/or legislation. The program is designed
for individuals who are interested in pursuing an administrative career in
County government.
